Lathe stand

I’ve been thinking about turning pins and strap pegs for guitars.years ago I had a lath that my brother Tony gave me, but after moving a few times the heavy big stuff had to go. I sold it to the brother of someone my wife knew. I looked at a few small laths on line but didn’t really want to spend any money, then yesterday at work someone gave me an old lath.

It’s an old Dunlap from the fifty’s I think. With limited space I decided to make a base that I could break down and store when not in use.

I did a quick drawing and squared up some 2×4 for material.

Cut pieces to length and some blocks.

Then some layout for notched joints. Then I’ll go to the table saw set the height and make multiple passes.

Then I’ll clean out with a sharp chisel.

Then I’ll use the same method to make half lap joints.

I shaped the feet on the band saw and used a few screws to fasten.

Notched out the top on the table saw and finish with the jig saw.

Another block will hold the tenon in place, nice and tight with no fasteners.

I’ll finish it with a sled for fan belt tension and a rail that will hold tools and add strength.
